I found “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” to be overhyped and underwhelming, but chalk that one up to my bias for scifi/fantasy. Still, I’m a big enough lover of books to appreciate how Lisbeth Salander and her edgy, tortured self has been having an impact on the catwalk. I’ve read a few articles here and there that suggest a gothic-inspired fashion uprising, which initially left me a bit off-put. I mean, I initially imagined horribly depressing strappy, tacky things that leave you with a silhouette that is more akin to a shadow. Ps. I am just siiick of vampires.
But alas, I’ve decided to take a more historical interpretation of this theme and embrace the subtle power and elegance (and dare I say, magic) of the middle ages. I imagine velvet, deep purples and maroons married with modern leather and studs. I’m open to this idea of dark romance, so long as it means I get to wear chain mail. And lace.
Here are a few specific “gothic glam” pieces that titillate me (thank you, Versace).
